Special projects

innovate sport are not just about 2 and 4 wheel academies and event days. We are able to advise and project lead design programmes. One such project is the Formula Classic single seat race car.

This vehicle was produced some years ago but now needs to be modified to meet the demands of the corporate market. Having an excess of power, which is fine for the racetrack and in skilled hands, was considered too lively for the safety of the corporate user. A detuning and repackaging exercise, whilst not affecting the general appearance, is our start point in the package. Tests will soon take place to understand the driving characteristics and how these can be incorporated into the new planned use.

By the end of the summer we should be in a position to post a vehicle specification along with dates for track days in the new vehicle on the Donington Loop.

Meanwhile to wet your appetite, this is the Formula Classic car as it appears in the Donington Collection, along with a brief specification.

  Formula Classic specification
Formula Classic cars are a thoroughly modern execution of the classic front engine post war Grand Prix racers, combining contempory race car engineering with a basic concept designed to create an equal test for drivers with 280 Bhp, narrow tyres and no wings.

The engineering is based on strong and proven elements. Triangulated tubular space frame with integral front and rear rollover hoops, plus side protection from the main chassis tubes, and over the shoulder.

The cockpit features a Sparco racing seat with 6 point harness, adjustable pedals and full fire system. The safety cell fuel tank is located behind the driver.

Behind the quick release leather covered steering wheel, lies a full compliment of clear anologue instruments set in an aluminium dashboard. Body panels are of a lightweight composite construction

The 4 cylinder 2.5 Litre Holbay dohc engine breathes through carburettors and delivers 280 Bhp through a slick Borg Warner LT5 gearbox and 5.1 : 1 limited slip differential. Double wishbone suspension with coil over shocks, 11" discs, 16" mag alloy wheels and treaded Dunlop racing tyres complete the package. Providing impressive power both in acceleration and stopping!
